The Wood We Use

We build our harps from four hardwoods: maple, beech, mahogany, and ash. Each behaves differently under string tension and each contributes something specific to the sound. Here is what they actually do.

Maple

Maple is dense, stiff, and close-grained. In a harp it produces a bright, articulate tone with clear separation between notes, so fast passages stay distinct instead of blurring together.

Its stiffness is structural as much as tonal. Maple resists bending, which matters enormously in a frame that spends every day of its life being pulled out of shape by the strings.

Beech

Beech is hard, tough, and unusually stable. It moves less with changes in humidity than most hardwoods, which makes it dependable in the parts of an instrument that must hold their exact dimensions.

It is not a glamorous wood and it rarely appears in marketing copy. It earns its place by not moving.

Mahogany

Mahogany is lighter than maple and warmer in character. It gives strength through the middle of the range and a rounder, longer sustain, so notes bloom rather than snap.

It has been used in stringed instruments for centuries for exactly this reason: good strength for its weight, and a voice that flatters the mid-range where most music sits.

Ash

Ash is light for its strength and open-grained. It responds quickly and resonates freely, adding liveliness without adding mass to the instrument.

Weight matters more on a harp than people expect. A heavier instrument is harder to move, and mass that does not contribute to the sound is simply mass.

Why use four different woods?

Because a harp is not one object doing one job. The neck resists tension. The soundboard vibrates. The body projects. The column carries load. Asking a single species to do all four well means compromising on at least three.

Choosing the wood to suit the job is ordinary practice in instrument building, and it is why hardwood selection is a construction decision rather than a decorative one.

Does the wood affect how I should care for my harp?

Yes. All hardwood moves with humidity, and all of it dislikes rapid change. Keep the room between 40% and 60% relative humidity, away from direct sun and heat sources, and the wood will stay stable for decades.
